North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme

September sees North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme celebrating its successful first year of operation.

To mark the occasion, the Scheme’s management committee is hosting a tea party at The Atrium in the town on Friday 9th September with special guest North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb in attendance.  Joining the Scheme’s volunteers and helpers at the event will be local residents who have been helped in the past year.  Representatives of other, associated, local groups and organisations are also being invited.

North Walsham Good Neighbour Scheme has quickly established a solid reputation across the town for providing an important service for those who need that extra help with everyday tasks. The Scheme also runs a community transport service affiliated to Norfolk Community Transport Association.

Chairman Peter Tobitt said: “The first year of operating the Scheme has been a steep learning curve, but with help from so many volunteers and others from the town community, we have achieved much and set down a foundation to show what can be done to help everyone in the town.  We are pleased that Norman Lamb will be joining us to give us his support for the future, meet those who made it happen as well as some of those who have benefited from the Scheme.”

Managed and delivered by groups of local volunteers, many schemes are aimed primarily at helping elderly, disabled or vulnerable people in our communities with everyday tasks such as shopping, gardening or lifts to the doctor.  As society becomes increasingly mobile, family members and friends often move away from where they grew up and people who live longer can feel isolated.  Good Neighbour Schemes help bridge the support gap and recreate social connections, rebuilding a sense of community.

“We are local volunteers who willingly give of our time to help others who need a hand” explains Peter. “We’re keen to build a network of support in our community to enable people to live independent and purposeful lives. We aim to give practical short term help to anyone in North Walsham who needs and requests it. One-off jobs might include giving someone a lift to go shopping or visit a relative in hospital, changing a light bulb or clearing an overgrown garden, filling in a form or walking a dog – we will try to respond whenever possible, but when we cannot we will help the caller to find a more appropriate service.

Our motto is: You Ask – We Help
