New bus boost to lifeline transport group

The new vehicle will help Norwich Door to Door meet growing demand for its services and help vulnerable people to avoid isolation and loneliness.

Funds for the new bus were provided by the Norwich Consolidated Charities, the Bawburgh Golf Club Captain’s Charity, the Geoffrey Watling Charity and the Shelroy Trust.

The Group’s Chief Executive, Danny Douglas, said: “We are very grateful to all those groups who supported us financially, which has allowed us to purchase the new wheelchair accessible vehicle. We now have a fleet of 11 minibuses meaning Norwich Door to Door can continue to challenge social isolation in the greater Norwich area.”

Norwich Door to Door relies almost entirely on volunteer drivers and passenger assistants to provide its much valued services in and around Norwich. The mobility buses offer the opportunity for their passengers to access fundamental transport to attend medical appointments, go shopping, to attend social events and to visit family and friends.

However, the group is now in need of more volunteer drivers to ensure it can continue to meet demand.

“We need driver during the daytime, the evening and at the weekend who can commit to at least one day per fortnight to help people get out of their home and into social situations,” added Mr Douglas.

Anybody interested in becoming a volunteer should telephone Norwich Door to Door on 01603 776735.
