UK’s largest Wheels to Work scheme kits out moped fleet with Maxxis Tyres

Dereham-based wheels to work scheme, Kickstart, has kitted out its 300 strong moped fleet with CST tyres from Maxxis. The not for profit organisation, which operates as an affordable moped rental service to empower people to enter and sustain employment, has swapped over from a premium European tyre brand in recognition of Maxxis tyre’s performance, quality and value.

Kickstart is the UK’s largest Wheels to Work scheme and caters for a variety of people across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. When internal testing proved Maxxis CST tyres compete, and often surpass, alternative tyre brands on wear, puncture resistance and grip, the social enterprise decided to replace its existing partnership with competitor brand, Michelin.

Opting for the Maxxis CST tyre for all mopeds managed by the scheme was an easy decision, as Barry Lynes, rider co-ordinator at Kickstart, confirms: “We’ve tried out most tyre brands over the years but operating as a charity means we have to be meticulous about delivering a value for money service to our riders and running an incredibly efficient fleet operation. When our testing demonstrated that the Maxxis tyre more than held its own against some of the more expensive European premium brands, yet was set at a more affordable price point, deciding to switch from Michelin to Maxxis was the logical thing to do.

“Other brands of tyres we’ve used previously have only managed 3.5k miles before they need replacing. The Maxxis CST tyre lasts for 5k miles, which incidentally is also our service interval. So, as a result of moving across to Maxxis we operate a more efficient workshop, have fewer mopeds off the road, which increases availability to riders in need of transport to sustain employment. Put simply, they’re great tyres and fantastic value to boot.”

Gareth Sloane, tyre and wholesale manager for Maxxis’ motorcycle division, believes the brand is going through a transformative phase and that the latest partnership with Kickstart is proof, as he explains: “Maxxis has traditionally been viewed as a budget brand yet, thanks to investment in research and development over recent years, the Maxxis brand has earnt its place amongst the premium European tyre brands. Being selected by Kickstart on the back of an evidence-based approach to testing a range of tyre brands on durability, puncture resistance and grip just goes to show that Maxxis means business when it comes to refusing to compromise on quality.

Kickstart is an incredibly worthwhile organisation that makes a huge difference to the lives of hundreds of people who would otherwise struggle to find and sustain employment. To be helping Kickstart deliver this vital service in a small yet significant way is fantastic. We’re really proud to have been selected and I’m confident that neither Kickstart, nor their riders, will regret their choice to move over to Maxxis.”

The Kickstart scheme has been in operation for 20 years and deals with around 700 applications each year and successfully assists around 400 applicants covering an area of 8500 square miles.
