Centre 81 doing ordinary and extraordinary activities!

28th April 2015

22nd April 2015

Today Frances undertook a sponsored swim.  What is remarkable is that two years ago Frances first went swimming and due to having to spend her life reliant on her wheelchair she has limited flexibility and movement in her limbs.  When Frances first went swimming with Centre 81 she was really scared and worried that she might drown.

The majority of us would have allowed our fear to take control.  Not Frances.  She was determined to succeed in her aspiration to learn how to swim.  Initially Frances created her own little whirlpool, going round and round in circles.

One year on something remarkable happened.  Frances returned from the swimming pool brimming over with excitement and told me “I did something I have never been able to do before.   I stood up and for the first time in my life I know what it feels like to stand on my feet”.

Today without the support of any water buoyancy aids Frances SWAM 10 LENGTHS BY HERSELF.

  • She did this because it was her ambition.
  • She did this as she wanted to do her bit to raise money for us to build a New Centre 81.
  • She did this for the sheer enjoyment of being able to do something independently.

Family, friends, Centre 81 members, staff and trustees proudly cheered her on.  My grateful thanks to Timea who has helped Frances achieve so much.  I am incredibly privileged to lead such an amazing team.

Thank you to all those who support us and huge thanks to Frances - Well done.
